5 Ways to Motivate Yourself

So we are officially a few weeks into the New Year. I know for me I almost always start to feel a little bit of emotional lag coming out of the holiday season. It's almost like the reality of everyday chaos resumes. I think it's good to have a game plan of the first steps needed to begin the process of tackling the chaos that ensues in our everyday lives. I know for me to come to the conclusion that I was done existing within Corporate America, there was a new challenge that I was faced with when deciding on what to do now.

Even no longer being held accountable to clocking into a regular 9-5 role, the never ending to-do list still grew exponentially. Even more so with deciding to work for myself. So you may be thinking how do you find the motivation to to start ticking off that to-do list when it all seems overwhelming! Well here are some tips to help you find your motivation.

Tip 1: Tackle the “Battlefield of the Mind”

  • Taking control of those chaotic moments and just G.S.D. it is imperative that you take a deep dive into your own mindset. I know that seems weird but trust me when I say the hardest thing any one of us will ever have to face in life is confronting and battling ourselves. We have to take a moment and learn to get out of our own way. Recently, I read a book by Joyce Meyers for a business development bootcamp I attended called Battlefield of the Mind. One of the major themes that comes to mind when going through the process of self-reflection is that “The pathway to freedom begins when we face the problem without making excuses for it.”

As you go through the process of self-reflection it is OK to acknowledge the good, the bad, and the ugly that shaped where things are now within your life. The key in this area is not to dwell on the negative. Embrace the actions, tasks, methods that you have experienced the most success when managing all that your life has to offer you. Use this tool to identify and come to terms that the past is the past and your future self will appreciate the work you do to make the necessary changes to become the bad-ass powerhouse you are destined to be.

Tip 2: Embrace your “WHY”

  • Take out a piece of paper and write down the things, people, and desires you want out of life. This is how you determine your “Why”. Once you see it written out, you're able to visualize it. With visualizing it you can embrace it.

Tip 3: Positivity Thinks Goes A Long Way

  • One thing that I have learned over the years is that the mindset you have is the driving force in your life. Within the Law of Attraction, we are taught that with all our thoughts and the words we speak the universe only hears and embraces the negative. There is power in the tongue and in thought. For me the greatest thing I ever did was shift my mindset and remove words like “I can’t” or “It won’t” from my vocabulary. Instead of speaking out the negative, change your thoughts and words to be positive language driven.

Tip 4: Make A To Do List & Reward Yourself For What You Accomplish Each Day

  • I know you are probably thinking why a To Do List. But I promise you this is a powerful tool to keep you motivated if you use it appropriately. The key here is to get all the chaos out of your head first. For me I have what I call “The Never-ending To Do List”. This list is literally my brain dump only. It helps to clear my head of the millions of actions I feel I need to complete. From this list I prioritize the actions I need to complete each day. I use this method to take control of my time and my life. I focus on making sure each day I take care of the top 3 things on my list that are a must. I also grant myself what I call my “Easy 3”, these are “Hooker Tasks” - they are low time cost and easy, #WinkWink. The “Easy 3” are tasks that I can get done in like 10-15 minutes or less. It's like instant gratification to Get it done. From there I also outline the next 3. After I complete my Top 3 and knock out a few easy’s I may or may not try some of the next 3 on my list. These items are important but I don’t allow myself to feel bad for not touching these tasks. The reality is these 3 tasks are in actuality the top 3 for the next day and if I have time to at least start it great, if not, there is no love lost.

Tip 5: Set a Deadline

  • I have learned over the years that it is perfectly okay to have a hard stopping point when going through your to do list. The key is to work on keeping your focus on the task at hand. Say you are folding laundry - Allocate a window of time, example 1 hour increment. I set my timer on my phone and focus only on folding laundry for that hour.

For us parents this may be helpful when the kiddos are asleep for this larger time block. Either way during this block of time, that is all I am doing during this window. What I have experienced with this method is that I actually find that I accomplish things fully rather than starting and stopping and thus feeling overwhelmed by the “Never-ending To Do List”!
