Finding the Right Products for your Loc Journey
OMG… I am so excited that Spring is finally in full swing now. Although, I am a little late with getting this out I think this is the best time to share with you all. It is the perfect time to revisit my favorite products for locs! Over the years my knowledge has vastly changed on many facets. The natural hair world can be daunting to say the least. Just take a look at YouTube, there are so many beautiful content creators sharing their stories, their favorite products, styles, etc. Whether loose, natural or locs it can be overwhelming to say the least.
Trust me I can definitely relate. So, I want to make this process a little easier for my fellow loc heads.
First off, let’s debunk 2 major myths within the loc community.
The Dirty Truth: Washing your Locs.
All too often we hear people pushing the notion that you should avoid washing your locs because dirty hair or locs grow faster. This is not only very unhygienic, but also completely false. One of the “magical” features of kinky/coily hair is water transforms those beautiful kinks & coils into the incredible and enchanting coiffure of locs. Always remember those moments of detangling all those intricate mass knots on wash day. Water is that God given solution that brings life to locs.
To use Conditioner or To Not use Conditioner - That is the Question
Again, another idea that is highly misconstrued is using conditioner on locs. Although, conditioner can lead to build-up in locs. The reality is that this has more to do with the use of the wrong type of conditioner. When selecting the right conditioner, you want to be mindful to choose a product that is water soluble. Just as you would with loose, natural curls, conditioning is key in fostering healthy & hydrated locs.
So, now that you have read my thoughts on 2 of these myths, let’s get into my personal products choices to maintain & grow healthy locs.
